CHILE Ojos del Salado (6.893 m.) IHE 02

Ojos del Salado (6.893 m.) is the highest mountain in Chile and also the highest active volcano in the world with active fumaroles in the crater, south west of the summit. The Ojos del Salado volcano (6.893 m.) is situated at 250 Km. In the north-west of the city of Copiapo in the northern third region of Chile.
The ascent of this volcano is not technically difficult, but requires good physical conditions and strength. This region is very cold; therefore, good low-temperature equipment is indispensable. The weather can be appalling, there are loose boulder fields above 6.500 m. and there is sometimes snow and ice which require the use of ice axe and crampons.

The volcano is located in a unique desert environment of intense, deep, green lagoons contrasting with the colour of the desert and snow covered volcanoes above . At these lagoons its possible to see big flocks of flamingoes, horny coots, many ducks, foxes and guanacos, who have all adapted to survive in this environment, with night time temperatures reaching – 25 c and winds over 130 kph. This expedition is suitable and fit for people with a good acclimatization.
