LAKE TITICACA AND SUN ISLAND DHE 12

The highest navigable lake in the world. It has as an average altitude of 3.810m.  and 8.300 km2. This is definitely the most enigmatic places in the world.

The main island is the Isla del Sol. The biggest and the most sacred place for ancients’ cultures and civilizations that were around the lake. The emblematic and spiritual center of Copacabana (3.810 m.s.n.m.). Its has been a permanent centre of tourism and pilgrimages from early times from the beginning of the Colony. The main attraction of the place is an image of the dark Madonna, carved by a native of noble origin called Tito Yupanqui, around the year of 1582. The dark madona“Virgen de la Candelaria” who is very well known for the miracles.  Many pilgrims make their trip by foot from La Paz to show their faith, same as places of Peru. Copacabana is not only a shrine; it contains the remains of cultures dating back before the Spanish influence in America.
PROGRAM

Day 01: La Paz – Copacabana: Early in the morning we leave from La Paz running northwest across the Altiplano. Along the way you will observe imposing view of the Royal Andean Range as well as the Lake Titicaca. After three and a half hours, we arrive to Copacabana (3.810 m.s.n.m.). We depart at 07:30 to Copacabana. After making a short sightseeing in Copacabana. We will spend the first day by visiting the calvario a good tower watch, in order to watch the great view of the lake Titikaka. Night in Copacabana, in a hotel.

Day 02: Isla del Sol: This day we take an excursion on board of a motor boat we’ll start sailing on the highest navigable lake in order to visit the south section of the sacred Isla del Sol. There are two main attractions: The Yumani area where we will find the fountain of water which is supposed to grant eternal youth and Pilcocaina area, a mysterious Inca site. According to the legend the Inca Empire began on this land. The Inca couple Manco Kapac and Mama Ojllo appeared here and founded the Sun Empire. It is ideal to make a short hike getting uphill the Incas stairs, the youth eternal water. We will spend the second night in Yumani in local accommodations.

Day 03: Isla de la Luna: The third day we will get again a motor boat in order to reach the Moon Island. Visiting the archeological site of Iñac Uyu or the temple of the ladies. In the afternoon return to Copacabana by boat and back to La Paz city by transport arrival to the hotel.

NOTE: After lunch we start our way back to La Paz at this point is also possible to continue towards Puno.
