The Illimani Mountain is a beautiful extinct strato volcano which overlooks the city of La Paz. Without a doubt many legends have been dedicated to this mountain considered to be the guardian of the city. The mountain was first climbed in 1877 but there are claims that even the ancient Aymara people climbed the top, where archaeological items have been found. Illimani (Illimani means golden eagle in Aymara)  It is the majestic mountain of 6,462m that adorns the horizon of the La Paz city, and it’s the highest in the Cordillera Real. Although it’s considered a mountain, is actually an extinct volcano, which had its last eruption in 1869.
