The grandiose Cordillera Real (Royal Range) begins with the majestic Mt Illampu (6.369m) which means the “God of the Storm”. This snowy mountain is in the western region of Bolivia, near the Valley of Sorata and at 120 km. from La Paz city. It forms a single massif with the Jankhohuma’s snowcapped mountain. It has a surface of 200 square kilometers, 6,485m and occupies an important region in the Bolivian Andes.
Its summit was crowned for the first time in 1.928 by Austrian expedition headed by Hans Pflann, Alfred Hores, Chowski, Hugo Hortnagel and Erwin Hein but many others had tried unsuccessfully in earlier days. Among the Most important peaks of the Illampu groups are: Illampu I (6.368 m), Illampu II (6.344 m), Illampu III (6.060 m), Illampu IV (6.070 m), Illampu Gorro de Hielo (6.060 m), Aguja Yacuma (6.072 m), Pico Yacuma (6.062 m).
Expert mountaineers consider it like the most difficult 6.000m mountain to climb in Bolivia. The southwest side is its easiest route, and is classified as AD (fairly difficult), with snowy slopes of more than 65 degrees.

Thanks to its immense gutters of ice and rock, it is a unique and challenging climb with endless possibilities for mountain lovers. Climbing this mountain requires mountaineering experience. However it is reserved only for the experienced and astute mountaineers. The whole route is technical and committed. The edge that takes to the summit is very hard and exposed. To climb up to this summit it is advisable to leave early because in the afternoon the conditions of the snow deteriorate due to the exposure to the sun of the great wall. The meteorological conditions are unstable and the winds can quickly turn violent.
The majestic massif of the Illampu with its thirty summits, reigns over the Sorata town with subtropical weather. The main summits of the massif are the Illampu 6368m, the Ancohuma 6427m and the Schulze Peak 5943m.

PROGRAM

Technical Difficulty: For climbers with considerable Experience.

Day 01: La Paz –Sorata (3.650 m. – 2.600m): We leave from La Paz toward to Sorata (2.600 m) by private vehicle (4 hours trip). This Andean town offers with its subtropical vegetation an interesting contrast with the severity of the mass of the Illampu. We spend the night in a small hotel of the town.

Day 02: Sorata - Aguas Calientes (4.600 m): We leave Sorata in a 4WD toward the Estancia Utjaña (3 hours trip).From there 3 hours of approach hike are necessary to reach the base camp at Aguas Calientes (4.600 m). Night camping.

Day 03: Aguas Calientes – High camp (5.500m): After breakfast, we go from the base camp, in approximately 5 hours, to the high camp located at 5.500m, there we set up our tents.

Day 04: High camp – Illampu (6.368m): The ascent to the Illampu Mountain is completed in 8 hours and the descent to the high camp in about 5 hours. Night camping.

Day 05: Base camp – Sorata (2800m): From the high camp we descent to the Estancia Utjaña and from there we return to Sorata by vehicle. Night in a little hotel in town.

Day 06: Sorata - La Paz: After breakfast return to La Paz by private vehicle after a short tour on the narrow streets of Sorata. Arrival to your hotel and end of our services.
